This is how the Brexit party leader reacted after the former prime minister accused the Brexit party of taking untracked payments from various sources. However, the electoral commission commented that their visit was not influenced by Gordon Brown’s allegations.
Only recently the electoral commission gave the Brexit party’s office a visit over the funding system controversy. As they were there to give a proper review to the funding system of the Brexit that too only when there are two days left for the European elections. This visit was in the view of the statement passed by the former prime minister Gordon Brown that the Brexit party receives big amounts via untraceable payments accusing the party of undeclared under the counter payments. He also stated that the payments for the subscription to the party by the followers are received through PayPal and that one cannot track from where the money is coming from thus the chances of unaccounted payments from various offshore sources is possible. and thus asked the electoral commission to find out from where the payments are coming from and of any sort of rule is not abided by.
Nigel Farage’s reaction
This is the reason why Nigel Farage is accusing the commission of coordinating the entire visit with the former PM. He also seemed really angry with the reviewing visit and said that the entire thing was decided and planned by many people together to allege the Brexit party. He also said that the planning was done quite beforehand and is strategically done just before the European elections to make the party look bad.
He also said that the electoral commissions visit to the headquarters and investigation is foiling the entire working of the party and also it is not good to question the new supporters of the party. Now that new supporters tend to pay 25 pounds for each subscription the Gordon Brown accused that through these payments only the Brexit party gets new funding and these findings can be from anywhere. The payments can be from anybody like Russia, America, etc. and can be done by anybody who is transferring through
PayPal.
Gordon Brown made the allegation quite clear in his speech as he said the party in doing various untraceable transfers under and over the counter, therefore, keeping the payments hidden and something that everyone must have missed before.
Just after the speech, only the electoral commission made the decision to visit the Brexit party’s new headquarters which is there for 2 years. within a few hours, only the decision was taken by the commission and that increased the overall doubt by the Nigel saying that everything is premeditated. Electoral commission said that they will do a thorough review of the financial system and what all funds they have received from their followers and subscribers. However, the spokesperson of the electoral commission said that the decision was not because of the former prime minister’s speech and comments.
