Henry Pollock has signed a Henry Pollock contract extension with Northampton Saints worth more than £400,000 a year, ending weeks of public uncertainty over the 21-year-old England back row’s future at the club.
The deal, agreed in December 2024 according to NewsCord, is a multi-year arrangement that secures Pollock’s services beyond the end of his current contract, which was due to expire at the end of the forthcoming campaign.
Henry Pollock contract extension ends prolonged standoff
The agreement comes after an extended and at times public negotiation. Pollock had been outspoken about his willingness to consider offers from elsewhere, including clubs in France and Japan, and said he intended to be ‘quite selfish’ in assessing his options. His current deal was thought to be worth about £150,000 a year, a figure that was supplemented by an England central contract of a similar value.
Earlier this year, Pollock added boxing impresario Eddie Hearn to his advisory team. Hearn quickly raised the stakes, publicly declaring his new client was ‘a seven-figure player’ whose existing pay had shocked him. That intervention served to frame the public phase of the negotiations and piled pressure on Saints to move significantly on their offer.
According to Yahoo Sports, the extension is worth more than £400,000 a year, a figure that aligns with the offer Saints had reportedly tabled. Northampton’s director of rugby, Phil Dowson, had said the club remained confident of agreeing terms, telling reporters: ‘We’re getting closer. As you can imagine, it’s complex. There’s a few moving parts that we need to put together, but I’m hopeful.’
Overseas move and eligibility risks now set aside
A move abroad had carried real complications for Pollock. Under Rugby Football Union eligibility rules, a player becomes ineligible for England once he begins playing overseas. Pollock would also have forfeited his central contract, worth about £150,000 a year, that currently tops up his club wages. A move to a domestic rival was complicated by salary cap rules, which prevent players transferring between Premiership clubs from being designated ‘marquee’ players whose pay sits outside the £6.4 million squad limit.
France and Japan had remained realistic routes had talks broken down, with a deal timed to start at the beginning of the 2027-28 season potentially leaving him eligible for England’s Rugby World Cup squad the following autumn. That calculation is now moot.
Pollock had been clear about his thinking throughout. ‘Your career is so short that you look back on yourself and you almost regret not exploring new avenues, exploring different things,’ he said. ‘I think for me, you almost have to be quite selfish in that aspect, think what’s right for you. If that is staying here, then that’s great.’
He had also spoken warmly of the club. ‘Northampton’s been so great to me, I’ve been here my whole career and they’ve made me who I am. For me to stay here would be so special,’ he said, adding that he understood the process was not straightforward given the ‘lots of moving parts that come into play’.
The Henry Pollock contract extension forms part of a broader Saints retention effort. Fly-half Fin Smith agreed a new deal in October, and wing Tommy Freeman is in line for a new contract this season. Scrum-half Archie McParland and prop Emmanuel Iyogun are also priorities for the club to tie down. Saints allowed club captain George Furbank to leave for Harlequins in the summer, aware that a group of young players from their title-winning squad were due significant pay rises.
Pollock’s off-pitch earnings, including personal endorsement deals with various clothing brands, were also a factor in the negotiations, with exposure from Test rugby and domestic competition likely to sustain that income more reliably than a move abroad would have done. The Henry Pollock contract extension keeps all of that intact.
