A group of Conservative MPs has given out that they would no longer provide support to Theresa May’s Brexit deal, giving a reason that many would be willing to vote it out, to make her leave the position of prime minister.
What is the Amendment About?
The deal was revised recently and Theresa came up with the “10 point offer”. This leads to a second referendum, which probably is the reason for the withdrawal. And out of all those who appeared to oppose the deal before the amendments, no one has turned up this time. The three main issues discussed in the amendment are about Citizens rights, the Divorce Bill and the Irish Border.
Who All Backed Away?
Even some of the prominent Brexit supported has drawn back themselves. Boris Johnson, Dominic Raab, Zac Goldsmith, and Jacob Rees-Mogg are few names of the bigger list. Boris made a statement saying, “against our manifesto and I will not vote for it”.
Why is it happening?
It looks like the collective opinion is not in favour of the creation of the second referendum, or the customs union. Raab, one of the leading candidate, said he would rather oppose the whole idea, saying: “I cannot support legislation that would be the vehicle for a second referendum or customs union. Either option would frustrate rather than deliver Brexit, and break out clear manifesto promises”.
There are more Conservatives who also are planning not to support it, including those who have previously spoken for the deal. Andrew Percy, who has to lead the group of around 100MPs for the Brexit delivery, says that: “I am frustrated. I voted for this at the meaningful vote on, two and three, but I am concerned about the proposed possibility of a second referendum. People were told it was the final say on the matter for a generation and it would be implemented”.
With the receding support of the Conservatives, experts say that the deal might be defeated than a greater margin than last time. UK parliament has already voted down the Brexit deal in the past, and the situation does not seem to be in favour this time as well. The Labour frontbench is opposing the legislation as well, and if May wants to successfully bring the deal into existence, she needs many opposition MPs to change their mind.
What Does the Brexit Deal Have in it?
The Brexit deal consists of the Withdrawal Agreement, which speaks for UK’s exit. It would create a “Transition Period” which will last till the end of 2020. Although no longer a member of the European Union, UK would still have to abide by the rules established by the former during this period.
As far as the Citizen’s Rights are concerned, Union’s nationals in the UK and Britain natives in the Union would still have residency and social security rights. Overall this seems to be a repetition of what has already been told to the public in the past, and they do not seem to but the whole idea this time.
