The university workers along with the students went on a strike in the West Thames college on Wednesday to protest against the party called far right Alternative fur Deutschland. The first conducted surveys to know whether the people were ready to protest or not. About 95% of the UCU members at Croydon College stood up beside the workers and decided to help them get better pay. The major reason behind such protests was the fact that they cannot blame the government for the poor pay of the workers. It is the university committee that is responsible for such a pay scale to the workers.
History proves that such protests help to get a salary hike
Last time when there was an 8 day of strike at the Capital City College Group, the workers got a hike by about 5% of their salary. This changed the face of the protests and the present-day protest is done keeping those factors in mind. The workers and students of UCU have decided to continue the strike till they actually get a hike in their pay scale.
No trust on the principal
The university workers declared that they have absolutely no faith in the principal at Oxford’s Ruskin College. A similar no trust statement was given for the vice chancellor of the University of Surrey Max Lu. Thus, it can be said that the problem has a very big face overall and needs to be addressed and dealt with carefully the authorities of different institutions. It must also be considered that the protests also have a tone of racial discrimination which means that the issue should be handled with a lot of care so that the entire situation can be balanced. The general secretary election for UCU is on and the results are expected by the end of this week. The socialist worker and many other organizations are backing the left candidate called Jo McNeill in this election. Thus, they have an upper hand in this election.
It’s been months since the protest started
This protest snot a sudden upsurge but started back in January and came to public notice in January, March and finally May. Thus, when there were opinion polls to know what percentage of population of workers are ready for a strike then the voting showed a 100% of polling results in favor of the striker and thus it became quite clear that this workers community is ready for such kind of a protest and ban if the workers do not find any significant increase in their pay scale.
Hence, irrespective of the community and racial aspects the hike in the salary of the workers is a must and this is shown by the attitude of the workers who are in charge of the administration. Gunnar Beck of University of Soas last week made it clear that he will be contesting for the Europeans elections that would be held this time.
