The multinational company Enbridge is under serious threat by the government as Michigan Attorney General sued the company this Thursday. The company faced serious accusations of dumping their dual oil pipelines to the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes are considered to be in serious trouble and the motion of dismissal has already been released against Enbridge. The agreement between the company and administration had done once before with the previous Michigan Governor but things did not work as intended. The company has agreed to build a tunnel to continue its operations.
The Great Pipeline Project
The Great lakes pipeline project indicated the replacement of Enbridge’s line 5 pipeline and the state authority agreed on overseeing the section that was to be constructed. The initial stages of the work did start as desired but the new Governor suspended the whole work. A violation was found in the construction of the tunnel and the bills presented by the company reflected that. Line 5 of the pipeline is completely sued and the usage of any resource has been optimally shut down. The governor has taken measures against the company.
Governors Verdict
The new governor tried best to make sure the pipeline is removed from the great lake straits. The Enbridge group responded by walking away from the negotiations and foiling a reciprocated lawsuit against the state. The governor made sure to openly talk about the pipelines and said that the company needs to remove the said line 5 on an immediate basis. The previous governor in the final days of his administration agreed that the company violated and it is an unacceptable risk to the Great Lakes. The authorisation of the tunnel in the section was not appropriately negotiated between the administration and the company. This is one of the main reasons for the company to shut down operations in the Enbridge’s Line 5 oil pipeline.
Violations In The Past
The company in the past has also been noticed due to spills and violations. The pipelines were responsible for spilling thousands of barrels of crude oil near the town. This further led to the contamination in the Mississippi River. There were other spills that took place almost every year. The spills generated contamination and smoke in many areas and extended to a few miles. There have been a number of incidents of reportable spills and the oil leaked in rivers has negative impacts on the whole area. The continuous activities of the violations underwent numerous inspections and the company also many times took precautionary measures. The measures did not cease the leaks and reports of various pipeline leak site came forward. This time the administration and governor made sure that the Oil 5 pipeline is completely shut down; so that no spills and leaks affect the Great Lakes.
There were many other controversies that the company faced in a decade or so. There were protests through summits that intended to stop the functioning of many pipelines that negatively affected the nearby area.
