Four people have been charged with the Baby S Sheffield murder after a newborn girl was found stabbed to death at a house in the city’s Wincobank area, police have confirmed.
Officers were called to Holywell Heights on Sunday morning following reports of concern for the baby’s safety. The infant was found dead at the address.
Five charged in Baby S Sheffield murder inquiry
South Yorkshire Police said two men, aged 19 and 38, and two women, aged 20 and 37, have been charged with murder, causing or allowing the death of a child, and perverting the course of justice by taking steps to conceal the killing of an infant.
A fifth person, a 15-year-old girl who cannot be named for legal reasons, has also been charged with perverting the course of justice. All five were remanded in custody and were due to appear at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court later on Wednesday.
The four adults charged with murder are: Peter Horvath, 19, of Holywell Heights, Sheffield; Andrea Skopova, 20, formerly of Robey Street, Sheffield; Nina Horvathova, 37, of Holywell Heights, Sheffield; and Peter Horvath, 38, of Holywell Heights, Sheffield.
Two further women, aged 26 and 37, who were arrested on suspicion of murder remain on bail, police added.
Extent of the baby’s injuries disclosed in court
According to BBC News, the newborn was referred to in court as Baby S and suffered 33 wounds from 15 separate stabbings. The detail emerged as the case moved through the early stages of the legal process.
Four of the five charged are to stand trial accused of murdering the baby, BBC News reported.
Det Ch Insp Tom Woodward said the charges marked ‘a significant step in our investigation into the tragic circumstances that resulted in the death of this baby girl.’
He added: ‘I would like to thank our communities, who I know will have been deeply impacted by this traumatic incident, for supporting us as we work through this intricate investigation.’
Woodward urged restraint on social media. ‘We would ask the public to avoid speculating and posting information online about this case while the legal process takes its course,’ he said. ‘Protecting the integrity of the criminal justice process is crucial to us securing justice for this little girl.’
Police said officers would continue to be in and around the Holywell Heights area as inquiries continued. The City of Sheffield‘s Wincobank district, where the house is located, is in the north-east of the city.
The five charged are due to appear before Sheffield Magistrates’ Court, with the four murder accused set to face trial.
