The Neasden waste facility fire that broke out on 28 August 2026 has shut the entire Metropolitan line and part of the Jubilee line, with train services to and from London Marylebone also delayed or cancelled as 125 firefighters battle a blaze at an industrial estate on Hannah Close, close to Wembley Stadium.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said it was called at 11:36 BST and deployed 20 fire engines to the scene. Smoke plumes from the fire were visible from miles away in central London. Residents in the area have been warned to keep their windows and doors shut.

Scale of the Neasden waste facility fire response

The LFB said the industrial unit on fire measures approximately 100m by 150m (161,400 sq ft). The Brigade has mobilised three of its 32m ladders, its Drone Team, a Hose Laying Unit and a High Volume Pump as part of its response, according to the LFB.

LFB Assistant Commissioner Andy Pennick, speaking from the scene, said firefighters were met by a well-developed fire involving a waste transfer facility and immediately requested 20 fire engines. ‘This is a protracted incident that will see crews on scene for the remainder of the day as the work to fully extinguish the fire,’ he said. ‘I’d like to thank our firefighters for their hard work so far at this fire, and our control officers for managing a significant number of calls and coordinating our response.’

The Brigade said it had received more than 70 calls reporting the blaze. Its cause is unknown.

The facility is run by London Energy, a company owned by the North London Waste Authority, which is responsible for disposing of all waste for the boroughs of Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest. A spokesperson for London Energy said: ‘We are currently responding to a fire at our Wembley transfer station and are working closely with the emergency services and relevant authorities. We can confirm that all London Energy employees are safe and there have been no injuries.’

Transport disruption from the Neasden waste facility fire

Transport for London (TfL) said the entire Metropolitan line was suspended as a result of the fire, while the Jubilee line was part-suspended between Willesden Green and Wembley Park. National Rail said rail services to and from London Marylebone were also being delayed or cancelled, with train lines to Aylesbury blocked.

A TfL spokesperson said: ‘We’re continuing to liaise with LFB to make sure we understand what we can operate safely for both our customers and staff.’

The disruption has extended well beyond the day of the fire. BBC News reported on Sunday that the Metropolitan line remains disrupted, with no service between Baker Street and Aldgate and severe delays on the rest of the route.

BBC News also reported that an Amazon delivery facility based in the industrial estate had not been directly impacted by the fire, but that staff had been evacuated as a precaution.

The LFB said crews are expected to remain on scene for the remainder of the day to fully extinguish the blaze.
