The Reform UK donations scandal has overshadowed Nigel Farage’s speech to the party’s conference, with front pages on Saturday leading on an undercover exposé broadcast by Channel 4 News alleging the party breached foreign donation rules.

The Times reports the speech was overshadowed by the revelations, while the Guardian says the party became ‘engulfed by scandal’. The Daily Mirror leads with Reform ‘in chaos’. The Sun takes a different line, saying Farage ‘hit back’ with the message ‘they’re scared of us’. Farage described the undercover filming as ‘a prolongued exercise in entrapment’.

Reform UK donations scandal: what the investigation alleged

According to Channel 4 News, James Orr, the party’s Head of Policy, and Dan Jukes, a close aide to Farage, arranged for a US company to fund three influential polls that Reform had commissioned. A £32,500 polling payment does not appear to have been declared, according to BBC News.

The Metropolitan Police have since launched a criminal investigation into Reform UK over the allegations, according to the Guardian. The inquiry centres on whether the party breached rules on foreign donations.

Noting that Farage has admitted Reform needs to professionalise, the Daily Express quotes him as saying: ‘Yes, we absolutely must do better.’ The Daily Mirror quotes him separately on the filming, with the party’s position characterised as one of defiance despite the mounting pressure.

Healey faces tight October budget with limited room

The Guardian reports that Chancellor John Healey is acutely conscious of factors beyond his control that are severely limiting his room for manoeuvre in October’s budget. In a weekend interview with the Financial Times, Healey acknowledges that households are feeling cost of living pressures, just as firms are feeling the cost of business pressures.

The paper says Healey is politically exposed after resigning as Defence Secretary. His predecessor as chancellor, Rachel Reeves, would not commit to allocating three per cent of GDP to defence by 2030. An ally of Reeves responded to the Financial Times with a text reading simply ‘Lol’, the paper notes.

Falklands and Bayeux Tapestry round off the front pages

Writing in the Daily Mail, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson says Andy Burnham must ‘get a grip’ and send reinforcements to the Falklands, following Argentina’s latest claim to the British-owned islands off its coast. The Daily Telegraph notes it would take about four weeks to sail UK aircraft carriers the 8,000 miles to the South Pacific. The Sun adds that Argentina has confined itself to sabre-rattling for now because its own army is so small.

The Daily Express pays tribute to the late sitcom actor Richard O’Sullivan, describing him as ‘the star who brought warmth and wit to millions.’ The Mirror calls the ‘Man About the House’ star a figure of effortless charm.

The Times, meanwhile, reassures critics of the Bayeux Tapestry’s loan to the British Museum that two damaged threads could have been broken as long ago as when it was removed from its home in France last September, rather than during the move to the UK this July. The paper’s headline on the damage reads: ‘Darn it…’

The Met Police investigation into Reform UK’s alleged foreign donation rule breaches is now under way, with the party’s conference week defined by the criminal inquiry rather than its policy agenda.
