Thomas Webster, who called himself ‘the ultimate genocidal racist monster’ online, has been jailed for two years after a BBC undercover investigation exposed his campaign of Thomas Webster racial hatred incitement across social media.

Webster, 29, of Lapworth, Warwickshire, was sentenced at Warwick Crown Court on 7 September 2026. He admitted 10 counts of stirring up racial hatred, along with counts of stirring up religious hatred and stirring up hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation, a total of 12 offences.

What the BBC investigation uncovered

BBC Wales Investigates deployed an undercover reporter who secretly recorded Webster at two events held by far-right group Patriotic Alternative in 2024. On camera, Webster said he liked to ‘deliberately’ give non-white people ‘bad information’ in his role at HMRC, adding he was ‘deliberately trying to sabotage them.’

He described himself to the undercover journalist as a ‘white totalitarianist’ who believed in ‘a world where white becomes the default human race… all other races will be extinct.’ During a hike with other Patriotic Alternative members, he boasted he would have ‘crushed [the] skulls’ of a group of non-white men if they had walked near him.

The programme, titled ‘Unmasked: Extreme Far Right’, was broadcast in January 2025. HMRC dismissed Webster the following month, saying it took breaches of its standards ‘extremely seriously’ and had ‘robust processes’ in place. ‘Where standards are not met, we act decisively,’ the department said in a statement.

Thomas Webster racial hatred posts and police action

Police opened an investigation following the broadcast and linked Webster to multiple social media accounts, predominantly on X. He was arrested for inciting racial hatred in September 2025. Details found on his phone and computer confirmed the accounts were his. He was charged in July 2026 and pleaded guilty the following month.

His posts included calls for the killing and extinction of his racial ‘enemies.’ He wrote that he wanted Jewish and gay people to be tortured and executed, and said he wanted to kill all Muslims until they were ‘globally extinct.’ In one post, he said if a migrant hotel were placed on his road he would ‘prepare for murder and prison time, I am serious.’ He also praised Adolf Hitler and the Nazis and told prominent politicians they should be killed or subjected to sexual violence.

After BBC contacted X about the posts, they were taken down, though the company did not comment further. Days before sentencing, BBC News found what appeared to be an active Substack account belonging to Webster. It discussed his arrest, included intimate personal detail, and contained comments calling for the ‘total genetic extinction’ of people from South Asia. One comment suggested the posts were made in breach of bail conditions that explicitly barred him from using social media. After BBC approached Substack, most posts were removed, though one relating to a charge remains visible.

The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed Webster was born on 26 January 1997. Prosecutor Jamie Scott told the court the CPS had taken a ‘proportionate approach’ to charging him with 12 offences, but asked it be noted there was ‘a raft’ of similar material posted online by Webster.

Sentencing and the Prevent referrals

Warwick Crown Court heard Webster had been referred four times to the Prevent programme, the UK Government-led scheme aimed at stopping people becoming terrorists. Police also found a crossbow, still in its wrapping, in the attic of his property.

Defence lawyer Susan Guest said Webster had long-standing difficulties with social interaction and anxiety, and that he had become ‘more isolated’ online where his views were ‘reinforced rather than challenged.’ ‘He almost lived in a bubble and this online community reinforced his views,’ Guest told the court. ‘That bubble subsequently popped and he now has to take responsibility for those actions.’

Judge Anthony Potter, sentencing, said Webster had been given numerous opportunities to show remorse and change his behaviour. ‘Talk is very very cheap,’ the judge told him. ‘It has allowed you to escalate your offending and propagate the most harmful views. I cannot accept that there is a realistic prospect of rehabilitation in the community.’

Webster will serve one year in custody and one year on licence under the two-year sentence. The Thomas Webster racial hatred case was brought following one of the first major BBC undercover exposés of the far right to result in a criminal conviction.
