A Kyiv railway depot strike killed at least six employees of Ukraine’s state rail operator Ukrzaliznytsia and destroyed a workshop overnight, as Russian ballistic missiles and drones killed at least 12 people across Kyiv and the wider region, officials say.

Twenty people were injured, including two children. Four of the dead were killed in the town of Boryspil, where a residential building was struck. Six of the eight casualties in the capital itself were railway workers, with fires breaking out in three city districts.

Kyiv railway depot strike halts train traffic

The Kyiv railway depot strike targeted rail facilities in Kyiv Oblast with ballistic missiles, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). At least seven people were killed in that attack, ISW said, including the six Ukrzaliznytsia employees. A workshop at the depot was destroyed.

Train traffic was halted on two sections following the strike before being later reopened, according to bne IntelliNews. The disruption underscored the operational impact on Ukraine’s rail network, which has been a critical artery for both civilian movement and military logistics throughout the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said nearly 350 rescue workers had been working through the night across Kyiv and the surrounding region. Writing on social media on Tuesday morning, he said Russia had fired a ‘significant number of jet drones and ballistic missiles’.

Sixth consecutive night of strikes on the capital

The overnight attacks mark the sixth consecutive day of sustained Russian drone and missile strikes on Kyiv, in what appears to be a strategy aimed at exhausting Ukrainian air defences and undermining civilian morale. Russia’s military warned over the weekend that its forces were preparing to carry out ‘massive’ strikes on Ukrainian energy facilities.

Russia’s military said its ‘massive strike using high-precision weapons’ targeted Ukraine’s ‘military-industrial and fuel-energy’ facilities. ISW has noted that Russian strike packages since late summer 2026 have been increasingly targeting shopping centres, food warehouses and other private civilian facilities, alongside infrastructure and energy sites.

One person was killed in Ukrainian strikes on Russia’s western Belgorod region, acting Governor Aleksandr Shuvaev said. Separately, a drone attack hit a major Russian Baltic Sea port in Ust-Luga, triggering a fire, Leningrad regional Governor Aleksandr Drozdenko said. Ukraine says targets such as Ust-Luga, which handles millions of tons of petroleum products each year, are legitimate as they help finance Moscow’s war effort.

Indian national among those killed in Boryspil

Eight other Ukrainian regions were also attacked, Zelensky said, adding that an Indian national was among the casualties. Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivsky later confirmed the Indian man, who turned 26 on Tuesday, was killed in Boryspil.

The overnight attacks came after 38 people were killed in Russian strikes on a weapons depot in the Kyiv region, causing shells, mines and drones to detonate. On Monday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war, saying every day of conflict set humanity back. India’s economy depends heavily on discounted oil from Moscow.

Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The human cost on the Russian side continued to mount. The Ukrainian General Staff reported on 1 September that Russian forces suffered 42,020 casualties in August 2026, the second consecutive month in which Russian losses exceeded 40,000 in a single month, according to ISW.

Zelensky’s office has not yet indicated when or whether Ukraine plans a formal response to the latest wave of strikes. The attacks on the Ukrainian president‘s office’s website noted that rescue operations across the Kyiv region continued into Tuesday morning, with emergency teams clearing debris at multiple sites simultaneously.
